Ironmongery

Just as with apertures, machining for ironmongery is very important and should only be carried out by competent trained personnel.

Before undertaking any machining of the door for ironmongery, check the Prime Door/Blank Manufacturers certificates, data sheet, technical manuals, or global assessments to ensure that the hardware you are fitting is suitable and compatible for the door.

Compatible – all components that are to be fitted to the door must have been tested with the door and frame and must have passed a fire test. Compatible components should be listed on the fire door certificate/data sheet or in the technical manual.

All of the components must match the information on the manufacturers data sheets and technical manuals. Some important things to ensure:

  • Machine the holes the correct size (not too tight and never too loose)
  • Use the correct intumescent protection, if it is required.
  • Check that you have all the components to fit the required hardware – read the installation instructions carefully. You may not have everything in the box!
  • Check hinge sizes against the fire door certificate and whether intumescent pads are required.
  • If the hinge sizes are different to the original fire door certificate, check the hinge manufacturers certificate to ensure they are suitable for the door.
  • Check that the door is suitable for a door closer you are intending to fit – Not all doors can be fitted with concealed closers.
  • Only use the fixings that are supplied with the hardware – they will have been tested with these fixings.
